About the role

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to join Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia Limited (ALSWA) as a Librarian in our Perth Office. 

This position requires a person who is highly organised and self-motivated. The librarian is involved in the procurement and management of this information to support the requirements of the staff within ALSWA. It is therefore necessary to be service oriented.

Law librarians work with material and information from a variety of sources. These include electronic online databases (researching information ranging from legislation and cases), print resources such as text books, reference books and law reports; journals and other documents.

Excellent communication skills, strong organization, time management, and project management skills are also necessary to manage a variety of complex projects within tight deadlines.

Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, society and the issues affecting Aboriginal people is required.

Duties:

  • Organise purchase of new materials
  • Create online databases in DBText
  • Catalog new inventory and update the databases accordingly
    • General database for books, journals and electronic materials
    • Specific databases updated daily – e.g. Supreme Court judgments
  • Digitise select documents into Apps(V:) Library. Linked to Catalogs.
  • Provide daily current affairs information - 
    • Newspaper clippings; News links
    • Distribute incoming information from appropriate sources to specific Units and individuals
    • Distribute on a weekly basis current judgments relating to Supreme Court & Family Court 
  • Manage licences and registration to online platforms
    • Register/deactivate staff for – Lexis Advance; CCH;  eCourts
    • Red Book – iPad/Registration (licence based)
  • Provide Library induction for new staff
  • Arrange training for staff for online subscriptions
  • Organise Inter Library Loans
    • Liaise with other libraries in procuring material
  • Reference and research information on request
  • COPS Manual – biannual update. Acquire updates
  • LAWA – Duty Lawyer Briefcase. Online; hard copy by request 
  • Court Regalia
    • Maintain register of jackets, robes, jabots and separate register for loans of these garments
    • Launder Jabot; organise dry cleaning of jackets and robes
  • Budget
  • Annual Budget allocated specifically for the Library
  • Two suppliers with annual contract; one with three year contract
    • Negotiate terms and content for online and paper subscriptions, including licences
  • Purchases also made for Court Officers from the Browns Trust
  • Monitor expenditure
  • Consult with John Poroch, Chief Financial Officer to confirm sufficient funds.
  • Subscriptions: Annual and three year
  • Negotiate with publishers’ representatives when contracts fall due.
  • Scrutinise titles and new developments; remove unwanted titles and recommend upgrades
  • Primary corporations are LexisNexis, Wolters Kluwer CCH, Thomson Reuters Westlaw.
  • Consult with Peter Collins, Director of Legal Services
  • Filing of loose leaf services x 4 (Monthly)
  • Modus operandi, moving forward: Preference to providing an integrated access to all sorts of resources and library services both traditional and virtual, and to one's own physical and digital collections, and to resources which can be located on any Internet site, whether public or private.
