Federal Register of Legislation : An Early Look!

ALLA (WA) 2022 AGM & End of Year Dinner - RSVP & Proxies due soon

The ALLA (WA) AGM, including special resolution vote, and annual dinner are next week on Wednesday 30 November.  ALLA (WA) members will have received an email containing details of the special resolution to be voted upon at the AGM.  ALLA (WA) members are also invited to join the new Committee at The Terrace Hotel for a complimentary dinner (pay-as-you-go drinks) following the AGM.  RSVPs and Proxies for the AGM and dinner are due by COB of Friday 25 November.  Send your Proxy or RSVP to the ALLA (WA) Secretary, Jane Beer .  Even if you can't join us, please complete your proxy form as it is important to enable the AGM to reach the necessary quorum for the AGM to proceed and for the Committee to be elected for the 2022-2023 year.  If you are having difficulties appointing a proxy, feel free to contact the current Committee who will be attending the AGM. They will be happy to act as proxy for those who require one.   

AGMs, Special Resolutions, Committee Nominations, and the End of Year Dinner

Notice of AGM  On Tuesday 18 October 2022, ALLA (WA) Members will have received Notice of the ALLA (WA) Annual General Meeting to be held on Wednesday 30 November 2022 at 5.30pm.  If you have not received this Notice, and are a current ALLA (WA) member, please reach out to the  ALLA (WA) Secretary, Jane Beer .  The AGM will take place at Allens, Level 11, Mia Yellagonga Tower 2, 5 Spring Street, Perth.  After the meeting, Gilien Bevan will show us Allen's new library space.  This will then be followed by our end of year dinner at The Terrace Hotel, 237 St George's Terrace, Perth - a short 2 minute walk from Allens.  Special Resolution At the AGM, there will be a special resolution proposing to amend the  Rules of the Australian Law Librarian's Association (Western Australian Division) Inc  (2021).  The AGM notice contains some details of the special resolution, and more details will be sent out closer to the date, together with a proxy v...

October Committee Meeting Recap

The ALLA (WA) Committee met on 12 October 2022 to discuss a number of important activities for the Division.  The Committee have decided that going forward we will provide recaps of what was discussed at each meeting to better share the work of the Committee with our Members. Key topics discussed at the meeting included:  Updating the ALLA (WA) Inc. Rules to meet legislative requirements Accessibility of Western Australian COVID-19 Directions AustLII medium neutral citation inaccuracy Database Roundtable Session  ALLA (WA) AGM and End of Year Dinner - 30 November 2022 Full details for the ALLA (WA) Annual General Meeting,  along with details for the End of Year Dinner and special resolutions to update the ALLA (WA) Rules, will be shared with ALLA WA Members soon.  The next ALLA (WA) Committee meeting will take place on Thursday 3 November at lunchtime via Teams. All ALLA (WA) Members are welcome to join the discussion at this and future meetings.

ALLA (WA) Event: Conference Recap with the Bursary Winners

Join ALLA (WA)'s 2022 Conference Bursary Winners - Sky Atkins and Alice Hewitt - as they present a recap of all things ALLA Conference 2022.  An opportunity to share learnings from the sessions, and to catch up in person after all this time. ALLA (WA) Committee Meeting - Members Welcome!

The ALLA(WA) Committee has their next committee meeting on Wednesday 13th July and we would like to invite ALLA (WA) Members to attend. Our meetings are currently held remotely via Microsoft Teams and start around 5.10pm. We know there has been some dissatisfaction from ALLA members around communication from ALLA National regarding access to the new ALLA website, the creation of new email lists and membership renewals. This would be an opportunity to ask questions, make suggestions and air any frustrations. The ALLA(WA) committee is also interested in hearing any ideas on how we can serve our members better. If you would like to attend please let David McDowell,  ALLA (WA) President know by COB Monday 11th August.

The Fallability of Memory and Fact Finding : Australian Academy of Law

An in person and online event that may be of interest to ALLA (WA) members: The Australian Academy of Law is pleased to host this free public event, chaired by Professor Robyn Carroll, UWA Law School. The flyer for the event can be found here , which outlines the session: The nature of the trial process proceeds on the assumption that the fact finder is able to assess the reliability and credibility of a witness giving oral evidence. Findings from psychological research and neuroscience studies indicate that memory is a reconstructive process that is susceptible to distortion. Questions arise as to a whole range of aspects of the imperfection of human memory. The legal system as a whole has not adopted all of the research findings on memory even though these findings may have implications not only for eye witness testimony but for how evidence is assessed. Get ready to conference! The ALLA Conference 2022 website is a great resource to find out all you need to know about the conference. Make sure you take a look to check out details about the conference, including special conference rates for accomodation . This year the conference is being held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart , Tasmania and the conference program looks to have some great events in the program! Workshops Per ALLA Conference Tradition, there will be a half-day MOYS Workshop held on 24 August 2022. This 3 hour workshop will be led by staff of the High Court of Australia Library. ALLA CPD Event: Trove Collaborative Services' New Pricing Model

Trove Collaborative Services is a membership model that aggregates content from the collections of nearly 900 Australian libraries and collecting organisations and makes them accessible through the Trove discovery platform. Trove Partners have access to a variety of services connected to Trove including digitisation, cataloguing, resource sharing as well as a range of promotion, learning and support services.  In July 2022, the National Library will be introducing a new Trove Collaborative Service pricing model that incorporates feedback from the Trove Partner community and reflects how services are evolving. Aileen Weir, Director of Trove Partnerships at the National Library, invites ALLA members to a brief webinar on Friday the 8th of April 10.30-11.30am (AWST) to hear more about the changes and their implications for law libraries.  After registering , you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

2021 ALLA (WA) Conference Bursary Recipients - Conference Wrap-Up

This year the ALLA (WA) Committee was pleased to offer ALLA (WA) members Kate Hewit and Vidagdha Bennett bursaries to attend ALLA's first ever, and slightly delayed, virtual conference. We congratulate them both on their successful applications for the bursary.  As part of the bursary both Kate and Vidagdha have written a short blog post recapping their experience of the conference.  To help them write this piece, the ALLA (WA) provided the following questions as prompts: How did you find attending the conference virtually? Our ALLA (WA) Christmas Dinner and AGM is fast approaching – taking place on 25 November 2021 at the Grand Bar & Bistro. The AGM will commence at 5.15pm. A complimentary two course dinner will be served, with drinks to be pay as you go. We have been asked by the venue to confirm our final numbers earlier than expected, and have had to move the RSVP date up to 9 November 2021.
