ALLA (WA) Event: Conference Recap with the Bursary Winners

ALLA (WA) Members are invited to join our ALLA (WA) Conference Bursary Winners for a night of shared learnings and catching up with colleagues.  When: Thursday 29 September, 5.20pm Where: DLA Piper, Level 21, 240 St Georges Terrace, Perth WA 6000 Register: Via the ALLA Website Event & CPD page . Join ALLA (WA)'s 2022 Conference Bursary Winners - Sky Atkins and Alice Hewitt - as they present a recap of all things ALLA Conference 2022.  An opportunity to share learnings from the sessions, and to catch up in person after all this time. ALLA Librarians take over the Lawfluent Podcast!

You read that right folks,  ALLA Librarians have taken over the Lawfluent Podcast this week! Our friends at Open Law, an innitiative of BarNet Jade, have been kind enough to let some ALLA members grace the airwaves during their season 2 episode: Law Librarians from ALLA! 2021 ALLA (WA) Conference Bursary Recipients - Conference Wrap-Up

This year the ALLA (WA) Committee was pleased to offer ALLA (WA) members Kate Hewit and Vidagdha Bennett bursaries to attend ALLA's first ever, and slightly delayed, virtual conference. We congratulate them both on their successful applications for the bursary.  As part of the bursary both Kate and Vidagdha have written a short blog post recapping their experience of the conference.  To help them write this piece, the ALLA (WA) provided the following questions as prompts: How did you find attending the conference virtually? Nominate your favourite Law Librarian or Legal Information Service

 ALLA National has launched their 2021 awards for: ALLA Law Librarian (or Law Library Technician) of the Year 2021 ALLA Legal Information Service of the Year 2021 ALLA Gem of the Year 2021 It's time to take advantage of the opportunity to nomination that person, or service, or customer relations person, who has provided you and our profession with exceptional service this year.  More information about these awards, and details of how to submit a nomination, are available on the ALLA National website, under  bursaries and awards .  Nominations close Friday 27 August 2021 at midnight (Eastern).  The winners of the awards will be announced at the ALLA National AGM during the  ALLA Virtual Conference 2021 , on Thursday, September 23.  The award winners and the text of their nominations will also be published in the December issue of the Australian Law Librarian Journal.

Putting Out Feelers : Job Opportunities

Excited for a Bill about Bills

"Excited for a Bill about Bills? That's like getting excited about the Acts Interpretation Act!" Keen followers of Western Australian legislation, would be pleased to see the progress of the Legislation Bill 2021 (WA) pass through the Third Reading in the Legislative Assembly yesterday. (Long time readers would remember this post from 2018 ). Even keener followers of Hansard would have noticed the Attorney General, John Quigley provides a summary of the Bill:  The bill proposes to modernise the processes for publishing WA legislation. It will enact a new Legislation Act that sets out the responsibilities for publishing WA legislation, provide for the official status of both hard copy and electronic versions of WA legislation and give the PCO a more useful set of editorial powers so that WA legislation can be kept up-to-date, modernised and simplified, and errors corrected, without the need for the changes to be enacted by Parliament. Law library industry movements

Natalie McDonald has commenced at Ashurst as a Research Librarian.  This is part time (Monday – Wednesday) replacing Lei Lin who is on maternity leave.  Natalie is also working part time at Williams& Hughes (Thurs & Friday) as a Librarian. Gisella Warman has commenced at Tottle Partners as an Information Resources Manager replacing Kirsty McPhee.  Gisella is working part time, Monday and Wednesday. Kirsty McPhee will be leaving Tottle Partners to take a position with Hancock Prospecting as an Assistant Information Manager.  Kirsty will commence her new role on November 26.   Kirsty will be staying on the ALLA Board as her role is a combination of litigation support and information management.  Kirsty can be contacted via LinkedIn . Congratulations to Richard Vankoningsveld

ALLA has appointed Richard Vankoningsveld to the position of Membership Co-ordinator. Richard has currently been employed at Legal Aid Queensland, has previously had significant involvement in ALLA Queensland Division, and brings a wealth of knowledge on technical issues to the role.   The role is for a fixed term of 3 years initially.   Welcome to you Richard!

Congratulations to Jim Pitts

On behalf of ALLA (WA) I would like to congratulate Jim Pitts on his contribution to the legal profession in Western Australia over the past 25 years.   Jim was recently awarded a National Customer Service award in recognition of the outstanding customer service he has provided as Relationship Director, LexisNexis. Jim always goes the extra mile to ensure his clients’ problems are solved and he has the ability to put the customer first in his calm and professional manner.   He has built relationships with many clients in Western Australia and uses his extensive knowledge to provide the best outcomes.
