Catalogue for the new Law Library

The Department of the Attorney General has updated their website so that it now includes the library catalogue of the Law Library at the David Malcolm Justice Centre. You can access the library catalogue here . The Law Library at the David Malcolm Justice Centre is at 28 Barrack Street and is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am - 5pm. It is closed on public holidays. The Library is for the judiciary, government legal officers and members of the legal profession, and so it is not open to the public.

First published in 1998 and commonly known as the Union List, we are now looking for a new name to bring it into the new century. So have your say. Mining Law in WA write up

ALLA(WA) CPD session: An outline of types of litigation under the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and some recent cases (Presented by Anthony Papamatheos, Barrister at Francis Burt Chambers) This lunchtime CPD session was hosted at Francis Burt Chambers on Thursday 15th September and was attended by 13 members and 4 non-members. Anthony provided a short overview of the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and Mining Regulations 1981 (WA), including the types of land over which tenements are granted in WA, the types of tenements and their key features and obligations.  We were also provided with an overview of the application processes, how tenements may be forfeited or surrendered and how underlying land owners or occupiers can seek compensation for loss from mining.  The session concluded with Anthony discussing some recent cases paying homage to the benefit of strong attention to detail and the importance of point-in-time research in mining law. Delegate report: ALLA Conference 2016

The Australian Law Librarians’ Association Conference 2016 was held 24-26th August 2016 at the beautiful State Library of Victoria. The State Library of Victoria Eight lucky Western Australian delegates were in attendance. (You may have seen the lucky group over on our Twitter ). Events on Wednesday the 24th August included a tour of the Supreme Court of Victoria Library. As well as exploring the magnificent heritage-listed building, delegates were able to view historical items such as the court book that records the fate of Ned Kelly. The first day of the conference program included the Welcome to Country that was conducted by a representative of the Wurundjeri Tribe Land & Compensation Cultural Heritage Council, offering an insight into the history of the Wurundjeri people. ALLA(WA) AGM We held our AGM on 27th July 2016 where the new 2016/2017 Committee were confirmed.  This term we had a few new members join the Committee Catherine Kafentzis from University of WA Law Library and Stephen Griffiths from the Dept of Attorney General’s Library. The details of the new Committee have been updated on the ALLA website , and our blog. The attendance at the AGM and past AGM’s have been poor and one of our focus’ for this year is to look at ways of improving the attendance either by combining the AGM with another event or holding it at different times (i.e. Breakfast).   If you have any ideas or feedback please let me know. A perceived lack of demand for eLending has put it on the back shelf, but new and innovative technologies are responding to the future needs of our busy lawyers and business professionals. Over the last three years the team at Wolters Kluwer, CCH has been collaborating with the law librarian community to develop an eLending solution that allows professional libraries to easily offer their users loanable eBooks. This project has developed significantly over the years and now the CCH ePlatform offers a device-agnostic and publisher-aggregated space for all libraries. Law Library at the David Malcolm Justice Centre

Information below provided by the Department of the Attorney General: From 1 July 2016, the Law Library at the Supreme Court will close its doors and the Department of the Attorney General will provide library services to legal practitioners at the Law Library at the David Malcolm Justice Centre. Legal practitioners (and other persons doing research on behalf of legal practitioners) can access the Law Library by going to Level 23 of the David Malcolm Justice Centre, and will be given access to the Law Library (which is located on Level 2). The Law Library's opening hours will be 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and services will include: - access to a browsing collection, with loans (other than loose leaf services) to take to court only; - reference desk services; - access to electronic databases at the Law Library (including LexisNexis, Westlaw and CCH) will be available from 25 July 2016; - photocopying and printing; and - document delivery. Fees will apply for photocopying

ALLA(WA) Supreme Court Law Library Farewell Event wrap up

Just a quick thank you from the staff of the Law Library of the Supreme Court to everyone who attended the recent Farewell Event. The staff value the support that they have received from the library community and found it lovely to have so many colleagues there that night. Conference Bursary winner

The Australian Law Librarians’ Association Ltd (WA Division) in conjunction with Wolters Kluwer CCH, is delighted to confirm that Mawghan Elverd is this year's successful application for the conference bursary. Mawghan will be attending the Australian Law Librarians’ Association 2016 Conference held at the State Library Victoria, Melbourne from 24-26 August 2016. Congratulations Mawghan!

Information Professionals in Western Australia 2016

On the 9 June 2016, approximately 95 information professionals met at the State Library of Western Australia to participate in a historical group photograph to capture ‘Information Professionals in Western Australia 2016’. All groups and associations were well represented and happily networked in between the group photographs that were taking place.
