Judicial Independence Event: Australian Academy of Law

This even may be of interest to your law library clients.  The Australian Academy of Law is hosting an event on Judicial Independence, Monday 22 August 2022 at 3-4.30pm Perth Time.  Judge Jose Matos, president of the International Association of Judges, and Justice Jacqueline Gleeson, High Court of Australia will be speaking on challenged to judicial independence, including the current situations in Poland, Turkey, and Afghanistan, along with considering what Australian judges might learn from challenges to judicial independence in foreign jurisdictions.  The event will be livestreamed from the Federal Court of Australia Sydney.  For more details or to register, see the Australian Academy of Law website .

 Our good friends at ALLA Victoria have scheduled another great PD event open to all ALLA members. From Student to Lawyer: How univeristy libraries are preparing students for real-world legal research How are university libraries preparing law students for real world research? Are there gaps in graduates’ research skills and knowledge that law librarians should be prepared for? Academic law librarians Caroline Knaggs from Monash University, and Michelle Bendall from Deakin University, will present and discuss the programs run at their institutes to prepare students for legal practice. For people with disability, accessibility features such as captions and audio description became more available through the influx of international providers. The Fallability of Memory and Fact Finding : Australian Academy of Law

An in person and online event that may be of interest to ALLA (WA) members: The Australian Academy of Law is pleased to host this free public event, chaired by Professor Robyn Carroll, UWA Law School. The flyer for the event can be found here , which outlines the session: The nature of the trial process proceeds on the assumption that the fact finder is able to assess the reliability and credibility of a witness giving oral evidence. Findings from psychological research and neuroscience studies indicate that memory is a reconstructive process that is susceptible to distortion. Questions arise as to a whole range of aspects of the imperfection of human memory. The legal system as a whole has not adopted all of the research findings on memory even though these findings may have implications not only for eye witness testimony but for how evidence is assessed. Webinar Opportunity: Space Planning in the New Normal

De Gruyter has been running an series of workshops on the topic Academic Libraries Reimagined .  On Thursday 19 May the 4th workshop in the series will be on the topic Space Planning in the New Normal .  Even before the pandemic, space issues were a frustratingly common struggle for libraries. And now, as we all prepare to welcome back patrons amid this new normal of pandemic living, re-opening plans have to be carefully crafted. There are no easy considerations. There are no roadmaps. There is only ever-evolving information as research efforts try to keep pace with the spread of the virus. ALLA CPD Event: Trove Collaborative Services' New Pricing Model

Trove Collaborative Services is a membership model that aggregates content from the collections of nearly 900 Australian libraries and collecting organisations and makes them accessible through the Trove discovery platform. Trove Partners have access to a variety of services connected to Trove including digitisation, cataloguing, resource sharing as well as a range of promotion, learning and support services.  In July 2022, the National Library will be introducing a new Trove Collaborative Service pricing model that incorporates feedback from the Trove Partner community and reflects how services are evolving. Aileen Weir, Director of Trove Partnerships at the National Library, invites ALLA members to a brief webinar on Friday the 8th of April 10.30-11.30am (AWST) to hear more about the changes and their implications for law libraries.  After registering , you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

2021 ALLA (WA) Conference Bursary Recipients - Conference Wrap-Up

This year the ALLA (WA) Committee was pleased to offer ALLA (WA) members Kate Hewit and Vidagdha Bennett bursaries to attend ALLA's first ever, and slightly delayed, virtual conference. Hi ALLA (WA) Members, Just a reminder that the ALLA Conference 2021 takes place this week – Kicking off on Thursday 23 September with a Welcoming Address from Her Honour Chief Justice Helen Murrell from the ACT Supreme Court, followed by a Keynote Address by the Honourable Justice Stephen Gageler AC from the High Court of Australia. Due to Covid restrictions, the conference is being held virtually. This allows us all to access the program of speakers and events this year from the safety of our home or workplace. It's ALLA Virtual Conference 2021 Month! Law Council of Australia Webinar: Frontline Legal Services in Times of Crisis

The Law Council of Australia is delivering an online webinar of the topic of "Frontline legal services in times of crisis".  The legal assistance sector has carried many Australians through times of extreme crisis, with recent years no exception – from bushfires to the COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar will explore the achievements of the sector in trying times, and examine the challenges it has come up against. Leaders in the sector Rowan McRae, Nassim Arrange and David Woodroffe will join with the Law Council’s President, Dr Jacoba Brasch QC, to identify improvements to be made so that the sector is better equipped to respond in future emergencies.
