Where for art thou, FLO?

The adventures of the Finding the Law Project continue!  So it’s time for another update from the Project Lead, Anastasia Stepanovic, and Project Coordinator, Alice Hewitt. Our last update on the ALLA (WA) Blog was back in June – and since then we have presented at the ALLA (WA) Conference, published articles in the Australian Law Librarian journal, and we’ve gained a lot of ALLA member feedback and suggestions – end even a few new members to the project team.  At the ALLA Conference 2022 in Hobart, Anastasia and Alice presented a paper paying respect and homage to the evolution of Finding the Law – including all its various names, formats, and teachers. The presentation was centred around where ALLA had began this sort of law librarianship skills training, the different names the course was titled over time, and the different divisions that took the lead over time. The conference presentation was delivered using Rise Articulate, the building ground of the new FLO Project and ...

ALLA’s first ever virtual conference is less than a day away, and sure, by now Zoom and Teams and virtual webinars have become standard (thanks Covid), but if you’re looking at two days of online conferencing this can be quite daunting. To help we’ve pulled together some tips on how to get the most out of (or just survive) an online conference. Before we get to those tips though, a quick word on the Social Event on Thursday night ( 23 September 5.30-7.00pm Perth time, via ZOOM ) - a live music quiz, brought to you by our friends (and Bronze sponsors) vLex and ALLA (Vic) President. A little birdy (ok, one of the hosts) told us to wear a hat, fascinator, hair accessory, origami, bird, pet monkey… err something on your head. Why? Is there a prize? Perhaps. Is it to be a great community building moment to embarrass us all equally about dumb hat choices? Also, perhaps. Either way, today’s blogger has got hers sorted, and she’s leaning away from fascinating. Now for the Tips. Be...

Time to Get Writing - Australian Law Librarian Journal

Unfortunately, due to insufficient contributions, we have been forced to delay the publication of the journal till the new year. A combined Issue 4 2017 and Issue 1 2018 will be published in March next year. Because it will be a combined issue the journal is seeking articles on two topics: Professional development Share your experiences on mentoring, being mentored and growing as a professional Library, Information and The law As library and information professionals, many of us spend our days researching the law, with this issue we take the time to reflect on the law. Share your thoughts on the latest developments in the law. Contributions are needed by 20 January 2018.  We also warmly welcome articles outside of these themes. The journal is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to your field by sharing your knowledge and learning with the wider profession and I hope you will consider contributing. LibrariesWA Facebook Group

Announcing the 'LibrariesWA' Facebook Group At the Library Leadership: A Celebration day, one of the consistent themes was about enabling communication across silos and different types of library and information services. In an effort to achieve this, we are pleased to announce the launch of a Facebook group specifically for Western Australia LIS professionals. Why a Facebook Group? Facebook is one of the most popular social networking platforms in the world. It may not be for everyone, but a lot of us use it to stay connected with friends and family, and now increasingly for work as well. A Facebook Group allows you to post messages to anyone who has joined even though you aren't necessarily connected with them directly, the potential to reach a relevant audience is much higher than posting from your personal or organisation page. The other really useful functionality is that any group member can create an event! The Libraries WA group has the potential to beco...
