Keeping Up With ALLA (WA) News

In March 2023 we announced the  closure of the Allgwa list , and welcomed the arrival of the  ALLA (WA) Google Group .  To take full advantage of the Google Group - particularly the ability to deliver news directly to your inbox - the ALLA (WA) Committee has made the decision to cease posting to the ALLA (WA) Blog.  ALLA (WA) Members are encouraged to join the Google Group to make sure they don’t miss out on key news, events, job opportunities from the committee and our members.  Over the past twelve and a half years we've have over 208636 visitors (and still counting) to the ALLA (WA) Blog, from all over the world. We thank all of our readers who have supported the blog. We especially thank all of our blog editors and contributors who have volunteered their time, skill and knowledge to develop this resource. The ALLA (WA) Blog will continue to be available in an archive format. We look forward to using the ALLA (WA) Google Group to share infor...

Goodbye Allgwa List

Hello ALLA (WA) Google Group! As with many list servs operating on the Mailman system, we have discovered that the allgwa list serve is no longer functioning as it should. We’ve explored maintainable long term solutions and alternatives to this and have decided to shift to using Google Groups to allow for the ongoing ease of communication and information sharing between members of ALLA (WA). All existing members of ALLA (WA) and the Allgwa list were sent an an invitation on 7 March 2023 to join the ALLA (WA) List Google Group . Thank you to those who have already accepted!  If you haven't accepted this invitation by now, it has expired. But that doesn't mean you can't join the Google Group. Just visit the link above and request to join.

Happy 12th Birthday ALLA (WA) Blog!

It's the ALLA (WA) Blog's 12th Birthday! The year has gone very fast; since our last birthday, we have posted 96 blog posts!  The ALLA (WA) Committee thanks all of our current and past contributors, along with our readers who are spread out all over Australia (and the world!). We look forward to sharing more with you during our next year! Our Blog has come a long way since our first post back on the 25 October 2010 -  a  President's Letter  from our then  President Jacqueline Seligmann.  Last year we celebrated with a letter from our President, David McDowell, but this year we're doing things a little differently and looking back on the year that was.  Since 24 October 2022, when we posted our celebration of our 11th Birthday , our blog has been viewed 15,200 times. Since 25 October 2010, we've been viewed over 197,000 times.  Our most read post of the year has been the Do you know about FLO? post. This post provides an update on the Finding...

Introducing Law Librarians Australia!

We wish to share with you an exciting update about a cross-divisional, joint ALLA (WA) and ALLA Victoria collaboration. Over the past few years there has been much discussion about better ways to communicate with current and prospective ALLA members.  The Western Australian and Victorian Divisions have been using various social media channels for quite some time including, Twitter ( @alla_vic and @lawlibsWA ), LinkedIn , and the ALLA (WA) Blog (which is celebrating its 12th Birthday this month). These have provided a well-received presence online, but both Divisions have concerns around the possibility of missing out on hearing from current and perspective ALLA members through not being active on other social media platforms where our members are. Together the ALLA (WA) and ALLA Vic committees are looking to work towards creating a space to engage all current and future ALLA members, no matter what State or Territory they come from, in a new formed social media collaboration: Law...

Do you know about FLO?

ALLA members from around the country have joined together to work on updating and expanding the Finding the Law Online (FLO) course! This sub-committee, led by ALLA Vic. President Anastasia Stepanovic and along with ALLA (WA)'s own Alice Hewitt as Project Co-Coordinator, will see the development of a new set of online learning modules for FLO. Drawing upon the jurisdictional expertise of  FLO team members - Paula Jane Everett , David McDowell,  Kate Freedman, Alisha Nolan, and Amanda Surrey - we will develop a course for new law librarians, or law librarians new to a jurisdiction, or just librarians trying their hand at legal research. The FLO Team currently has volunteers who will share their knowledge of case law and legislation research for the Commonwealth, the Australian Capital Territory, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia. For New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Queensland - we are still looking for volunteers. Please get in touch...

9 Tips for Getting the Most out of ALLA's Virtual Conference 2021

ALLA’s first ever virtual conference is less than a day away, and sure, by now Zoom and Teams and virtual webinars have become standard (thanks Covid), but if you’re looking at two days of online conferencing this can be quite daunting. To help we’ve pulled together some tips on how to get the most out of (or just survive) an online conference. Before we get to those tips though, a quick word on the Social Event on Thursday night ( 23 September 5.30-7.00pm Perth time, via ZOOM ) - a live music quiz, brought to you by our friends (and Bronze sponsors) vLex and ALLA (Vic) President. A little birdy (ok, one of the hosts) told us to wear a hat, fascinator, hair accessory, origami, bird, pet monkey… err something on your head. Why? Is there a prize? Perhaps. Is it to be a great community building moment to embarrass us all equally about dumb hat choices? Also, perhaps. Either way, today’s blogger has got hers sorted, and she’s leaning away from fascinating. Now for the Tips. Be...
