Icebreaker breakfast : 20 February 2013

About 40 members and non-members turned out for the annual ALLA (WA) Icebreaker on the morning of 20 February, held in the Swan Boardroom at the Department of Commerce.  The guest speaker was Ms Chris Richardson of the School of Media, Culture and the Creative Arts at Curtin University.  She spoke on the forthcoming RDA (Resource Description and Access) cataloguing standard - a very relevant topic these days.  It was a pleasure to see so many new (potential members) faces! Thank you to Stel for providing the venue and organising the catering.  The very generous and healthy breakfast was kindly sponsored by Justis, our new sponsor. Belinda Eisenhauer

Greetings from Melbourne

The ALLA Ltd Board and the NEC met in Melbourne today - and enjoyed the views from the 23rd floor of the BHP Billiton building. The best part of a Melbourne meeting? It isn't 40-plus degrees! The JSI begins in a few hours - stay tuned for updates from Belinda and Kirsty. Kirsty McPhee

$5000 prize on offer for library excellence

Did you make an impact on library services in 2012 with an innovative service, event, program, piece of research or partnership? Individuals, libraries and organisations are encouraged to nominate their project for the 2013 Library Board of Western Australia Award for Excellence. The $5000 prize will recognise a project which made a significant contribution to the Western Australia library industry and library services in 2012. The Award is not restricted to libraries and librarians – nominations are encouraged from all areas of the library industry and related sectors. Previous winners of the Award are the City of Wanneroo for a project which provided resources to book clubs in remote areas, and the City of Fremantle for a temporary outdoor reading room which transformed Kings Square into an active social hub. “The Award is linked to the Board’s leadership role in guiding and encouraging the provision of all library services throughout the State”, said Professor Margaret Nowak, Chairm...

Appendix : Message from the President

Message from the President

Dear members, Welcome to the New Year. Last year, 2012, was a year of change. The special resolution vote to dissolve ALLA Inc was passed at the AGM. This was the first step in achieving the National Membership Model. Since then, the Commissioner of Consumer Affairs (WA) has approved the wind-up of the national entity of ALLA Inc and the transfer of assets to ALLA Ltd. We have also introduced new sub-committees such as the Salary Survey Sub-Committee and the Blog Focus Group. Both are working on a number of initiatives and projects. Our CPD program continues to be successful and well attended. The annual Christmas party is more popular than ever. This year we aim to do it bigger and better. We will continue to reach out to our members with the initiatives started off by the various sub-committees and also come up with new ones to better serve our members and create a platform for bonding. The first event of the year is the Icebreaker Breakfast, which will be held on 20 Febr...
