One Audience for Accessibility: How Captions and Audio Description Help Everyone

This week's Curtin Corner Webinar may be of interest to those working in the eLearning space when training their library clients.  From the JCIPP abstract:  The popularity of subscription video on demand platforms during COVID-19 prompted a new era in this form of entertainment. For people with disability, accessibility features such as captions and audio description became more available through the influx of international providers. At the same time, a larger audience also began using these features as part of their lockdown television experience. This presentation reports on research into captions and audio description, and finds that international legislation and audience preference has much wider benefits than might be expected. What Classification System Do You Use?

Fiona MacDowall, the Business Manager for the Australia Law Librarian Journal , has a request for Law Librarians out there.  Fiona will be presenting a session on library classification systems at the ALLA Conference 2022 in Hobart on 24-26 August. She will be talking about Moys in particular, as well as other scheme.  For her presentation research, she would love to know how many law libraries use Moys and what other schemes are used. She is also interested in how comfortable librarians feel in cataloguing using Moys and what type of training is required.  Please help Fiona prepare this presentation by completing this short survey available on Google Forms . It should take less than 3 minutes.  If you cannot access the Google Form to complete the survey, please contact Fiona at the Business Manager email address .  For those interested, a Moys workshop is being offered during the ALLA Conference. Spaces are limited.

The Fallability of Memory and Fact Finding : Australian Academy of Law

An in person and online event that may be of interest to ALLA (WA) members: The Australian Academy of Law is pleased to host this free public event, chaired by Professor Robyn Carroll, UWA Law School. The flyer for the event can be found here , which outlines the session: The nature of the trial process proceeds on the assumption that the fact finder is able to assess the reliability and credibility of a witness giving oral evidence. Findings from psychological research and neuroscience studies indicate that memory is a reconstructive process that is susceptible to distortion. Questions arise as to a whole range of aspects of the imperfection of human memory. The legal system as a whole has not adopted all of the research findings on memory even though these findings may have implications not only for eye witness testimony but for how evidence is assessed. Speakers at the event include Professor Ulrich Ecker, University of Western Australia and Justice Craig Colvin, Federal Court of A...
