Court Librarian

The High Court of Australia has advertised for the full-time, ongoing position of Court Librarian. 

The Court is seeking an energetic, motivated and experienced professional to lead our Library and provide innovative leadership to a team responsible for the provision of high-quality library, research and information services to the High Court.

This positiion is at an EL2 level and is located at the High Court of Australia in Canberra, ACT.

Working with a dedicated team, the Court Librarian will ensure that our Library services are contemporary and reflect best practice. The Court Librarian will continuously look for opportunities to improve the way we deliver services including through the utilisation of technology.

The Court Librarian will have the knowledge and experience to manage a major law collection and legal reference/research service. A sound knowledge of legal reference sources, publications, and electronic legal research platforms is essential for this role, as is an understanding of best practice in public sector procurement.

The duties and responsibilities of the Court Librarian may include:
  • under the aegis of the Library Committee provide strategic planning, including development and maintenance of Library policies, risk management plans, budget, and operating procedures
  • leading, managing and mentoring the Library team to ensure a productive, motivated, flexible and efficient working group
  • leading, researching, designing, recommending, and managing projects to maintain and enhance the delivery of information services to the Court
  • the selection of library materials in accordance with the High Court Library Collection Development Policy
  • managing the development of archival collections and services and associated digital repositories within the Court
  • negotiating and managing contracts and relationships with major publishers and library/information vendors
  • liaising, negotiating, and collaborating with other Commonwealth and State Court libraries in relation to membership of the Australian Courts Consortium for a shared library management system
  • ensuring the delivery of professional information literacy training and induction programs for Court staff
  • representing the Court at meetings, conferences and seminars.
