November PD's for ALLA Members

Strategic Plans for Libraries

Tuesday 9 November, 10.00am (AWST)

In this session two law librarians share their experiences developing and implementing strategic plans for their libraries.

Register online: NOTE: this event is open to ALLA members only, please have your membership number with you when you register.

At the Supreme Court of Victoria, consultation with the legal sector helped develop a five-year strategic plan that reflected the desire for a modern and dynamic Law Library of Victoria. The plan aims to establish a digital library service to support current and future generations of the legal profession to deliver better justice outcomes for all Victorians.

Law Library of Victoria Librarian Laurie Atkinson will present the strategic plan and describe the consultation process, how the plan evolved, became operational, and how progress is measured.

From the Supreme Court Library Queensland, David Bratchford will focus on the process of developing SCLQ’s current strategic plan, including their remote collaboration with Dr Finch and intensive consultation with key legal sector stakeholders.

The five year strategic plan has helped the library to successfully navigate the treacherous waters of the coronavirus pandemic, provided a map for the future of SCLQ library services. David will briefly describe the finished product, and discuss its role in helping the library position itself as the state’s leading legal library – ‘your law library’ for the majority of Queenslanders.

About the Presenters

Laurie Atkinson derives great enjoyment from leading the team of the Law Library of Victoria. Part of her role is to execute a long-range strategy to improve library services to Victorian judges and lawyers, with the flow on impact of improving access to justice for all Victorians.

David Bratchford has been Queensland’s Supreme Court Librarian since September 2013. During his time at SCLQ his focus has been on modernising the library, including its staffing structure and working conditions, work practices and processes, technology, collections and services.

If I knew then what I know now: Life as a junior lawyer in 2021 and how Practical Law can help

Wednesday 24 November, 10.00am (AWST)

ALLA is proud to present Zachary Low and Shan-Ree Tan, both with Thomson Reuters Practical Law. They will present a webinar on the pressures faced by junior lawyers to deliver high quality and timely work while still learning their craft - and provide examples of how Practical Law resources can help.

  • Want insight into the pressures faced by junior lawyers in law firms?
  • Curious about how product trainers can collaborate with you to deliver more than a standard product tour?
  • Interested to learn how Thomson Reuters Practical Law provides real world guidance to deliver everyday legal work to a high standard?

If the answer to any of these questions is yes then come and hear from these former lawyers who survived the ordeal and are willing to share their hard earned wisdom. This session is based on one delivered to K&L Gates lawyers as a result of conversations between K&L Gates Library staff and Zac from Practical Law.

Cost: Free to ALLA Members

We Thank: Thomson Reuters, Zac and Shan

About the Presenters

Zachary Low, Client Specialist, Practical Law. Recovering former lawyer who worked for Corrs, Dentons, DFAT and a litigation funder.

In my spare time I fancy myself as an amateur playwright because at the end of the day lawyers are really just a group of frustrated comedians.

Shan-Ree Tan, Senior Lawyer Writer, Practical Law. Former corporate transactions and advisory lawyer at Gilbert + Tobin. Also worked at ASIC and the NSW Supreme Court. In my spare time I am an actor, because I like to stay “on brand”.

Michelle Clarke, Research Analyst, K&L Gates. I joined K&L Gates just in time to experience the full impact of COVID, with all facets of work moving into fully online, including my special focus of training.

Phil Mullen, Facilitator of the session, Library Manager and Litigation Liaison at K&L Gates
